Walkable/Livable Community Projects in Sacramento

Sacramento, like many other American cities, has a significant problem with urban sprawl. People have talked about the possible "Los Angelization" of Sacramento in the future with comparable traffic congestion. Sacramento is already high on the list of cities with air quality problems caused by vehicular traffic. With the rise of the new urbanism movement across the nation, there is hope in the Sacramento area that negative trends may be reversed over time. Below are existing and planned projects that are examples of walkable/livable community projects in metropolitan Sacramento.

Village Homes- A 2/22/99 online Time magazine article from the series Heroes For The Planet about livable community pioneers Michael and Judy Corbett and Village Homes in Davis.

Lighted Crosswalk at California State University, Sacramento- In preparation for the Olympic Track and Field Trials in the summer of 2000, a lighted "in pavement" crosswalk was installed for pedestrian safety. This crosswalk will provide safety for pedestrians during the daytime and at night when the track and field trials begin and the vehicle and pedestrian traffic is especially heavy. The crosswalk is located on the campus on Jordon Way between the parking lot and the track and field site as shown on the map below. Contact Bill Streater if you want more information on the lighted crosswalk and this project- Ph. (916) 394-9884 or 1-888-446-9255. Note: Jordon Way changes to College Town Drive as you go east toward Howe Ave.
