Walk Score- A site that will give you a "walkability" score for any address you enter. The walkability scoring system has limitations as it is based primarily on how many destinations (stores, restaurants, schools, parks, etc.) are near any given location. It does not adequately take into consideration the condition of the walking environment. Also, it could give a location a low score if it is not near many destinations but may have good walking conditions for walking for fitness and health reasons.

Walk to School Day in Sacramento in 2006

Oak Park Youth Walk

On April 22nd, the Oak Park Neighborhood Association, 100Minds and WALKSacramento held a Youth Walk along Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. The goal was to get a better understanding of what is important to the youth of the community.

As a group, the 13 of us started with talking about what it is like to be a youth and walk in Oak Park. The students who participated ranged from 9 to 17 years old. The heard a lot of talk about gangs and felt there was too much drama on the streets, but with some creative work they felt that MLK could be made a place where youth would want to be. Their ideas included adding additional safe places with activities for teens and more lights. They liked the idea of wider sidewalks and safer crossings, especially at the schools.

On the walk, two of the students, Sasha and Kayla, used digital cameras to capture their experiences. Click here to see a few of their photos.
