I see cops set up sting opperations for peaple running through crosswalks. Its never a good idea to teach peaple its okey to walk in front of a car becuse they are supposed to stop. Cops and these stupid sidewalks with no stop lites are getting peaple run over. The older I get the harder it is for me to see its worse at night.
Hello,
I read the Sac Bee article about WALKSacramento this past December, and I was struck how your organization does such great things that also happens to be a great blend of my interests.
I am a freshman at Macalester College (a small liberal arts college in Saint Paul, MN) pursuing a Geography major with a concentration in Urban Studies. I live in Davis, and I am searching for internship opportunities during my summer break that are related to my interest in cities and community planning.
If there are any upcoming or continuing projects that could use an intern, or if WALKSacramento could just use a more general intern, I would be very interested in the position.
I have strong research and communication skills, and I also have prior experience in the nonprofit sector. I'm home for the holidays until January 20th and will return home for summer in early May. I would be happy to hear about any opportunities at WALKSacramento. Thank you for your consideration!
Sincerely,
Claire Finn

How do I get around Sacramento? What challenges do I face? What needs to change to make walking, bicycling better for me?

I'm a low income, displaced worker who has gone back to school. I live near McKinley Park and walk out of necessity, even if it's walking to bus stops or light rail stops. I walk all over downtown, and midtown. I walk in east Sacramento as well.

The main challenges I face are bicyclists running red lights and bicyclists speeding on sidewalk/footpaths. Bicyclists in midtown routinely run red lights with no consideration for pedestrians walking in sidewalks on green lights. Sidewalks throughout downtown and midtown expose walkers to the same inconsiderate, hazardous bicyclists. The footpaths around and on Sac State are simply dangerous for walkers unfortunate enough to use them. Automobiles, trucks, and RT busses that accelerate through yellow lights or simply run red lights are another hazard to walking pedestrians.

To make walking better for me, urge the several local police agencies to enforce speeding and other traffic laws already in place. These laws regulate the operation of automobiles, trucks, busses and bicycles; that's how they should be enforced.

Congratulations, Teri.

After reading a newspaper article about you being involved with Design Sacramento 4 Health and the Light Rail being bike friendly, I thought I would drop you a line about my experience on the Light Rail with a bike.

First of all, this was my first experience on the Light Rail with a bike along with my girlfriends. That was also our last experience on the Light Rail because the adventure was not bike friendly at all. The Light Rail operator was not friendly, not helpful and down right rude when he found out that we did not know the rules of the train. In addition to him, we had to lift our bikes up steep steps and beat the doors from closing on us and they did! We all dreaded getting off the train because we knew we had to race against the doors again if we wanted to get off the train with our bikes. We like an adventure but we all would have been better off riding our bikes back from Old Sacramento to Folsom instead of trying out the Light Rail. So please, do not call the Light Rail service in Sacramento, "bike friendly"; it is not.
